Floods don't have to be killers!

Current news related to the ALERT Systems Organization.

Fellow ALERT system managers and operators:
During the past two years there has been extensive discussion of adapting the ALERT radio protocol to more modern and efficient methods. This is due to the immense demand on the radio frequency spectrum with the concomitant need to use that spectrum more efficiently. The vastly improved communications technology field also allows us many more possibilities in flood warning data transfer that were not present before.

The National Weather Service has stepped forward to support our effort to investigate ways to improve the ALERT radio protocol. Their support is greatly appreciated and needed. The first step in our investigation is to draft a RFP and have those in the ALERT and communication fields respond.

Stephen Francis of the National Weather Service Office of Hydrology has composed an excellent article describing the current situation and framework within which we can move forward on this issue.

Please take the time to review his article and send any comments you may have to the email address and discussion board cited in the article.

This notice and Stephen Francis’ article are also being posted on the Floodsystems List server. If you wish to join that list server please click on the link at the bottom of the page.

Thank you.
